Educational Objectives: |
At the end of this meeting, participants should:
- understand the role of cellular immunity in asthma, effector molecules in episodic asthma, and the mechanisms of obstruction
- recognize the signs of respiratory failure, understand the use of mechanical ventilation, and identify the obstructive mechanisms involved in life threatening asthma
- specify the components of innate immunity, evaluate deficiencies in innate immunity, identify deficiencies in cellular, and humoral immune systems and initiate laboratory evaluation and treatment
- define therapeutic monoclonal antibodies, understand their use in the treatment of allergic disease, and understand how IVIG acts as an immune modulator for autoimmune disorders
- recognize the role of histamine in inflammation, understand the cellular interaction of histamine, and the pathology involved
- understand how antihistamines function as histamine blockers and become aware of the uses of antihistamines as immunomodulators
